Stone fortresses: the castles of the Vicenza area

A journey through ancient walls, enduring legends and historic noble residences

The province boasts splendid medieval fortifications, starting with Marostica’s famous complex, where the town walls connect the Lower Castle with the Upper Castle on Pausolino Hill. Both can be visited, and the upper structure also hosts a dining venue.

In Montecchio Maggiore stand the Castles of Juliet and Romeo, connected to the legend born from a story by a Vicenza author. The buildings can be visited, though Juliet’s Castle is accessible only through the restaurant. In Thiene, the castle, a historic residence of Veneto, hosts events, festivals and hospitality.

Among Towers and Breathtaking Villages

In Bassano stands the Ezzelini Castle, former residence of the powerful family, now hosting exhibitions and guided visits. In Brendola, the Rocca dei Vescovi dates back to before the year 1000 and was for centuries the seat of episcopal jurisdiction; it can be visited independently.

The journey continues to Montegalda with Castello Grimani Sorlini, an 11th-century structure still accessible with its owners. Finally, in Velo d’Astico, the local historic panorama is completed by the evocative remains of the tower and walls of Velo Castle.
