Trails and pastures: the Caltrano Mountain Hut Tour

A panoramic 12 km loop among local flavours and Great War memories

This 12-kilometre circuit develops south-west of the Asiago Plateau, in the municipality of Caltrano. Accessible on foot, by bike or on horseback, the loop takes about three hours and offers views over the Venetian plain as far as the lagoon. It can be started from Bar Alpino in Caltrano or from Bocchetta Granezza.

The route touches six active mountain dairies that, from June to September, offer cheeses, cured meats and traditional sweets. Along the way, historic rural architecture stands out, such as the interlocking wooden structure of Malga Carriola and the characteristic old casone of Malga Serona.

Amid karst landscapes and places of remembrance

The natural setting alternates woods and karst phenomena: Malga Pau stands among sinkholes near the pass of the same name, while Malga Sunio occupies a broad depression. South of Monte Foraoro, the pastures turn yellow with gentian, while Malga Fondi lies in a stone-lined basin.

The itinerary crosses the rear lines of the First World War, where French and British troops operated in 1918. Among trenches and the ancient Strada del Generale, visitors discover logistic positions and memorial stones of the Strafexpedition, with more demanding variants towards Calvene, Lugo and Lusiana.
