Montecchio Maggiore

Montecchio Maggiore is globally celebrated for the twin castles of Bellaguardia and Villa, famously known as the Castles of Romeo and Juliet. It was within these very medieval walls that local writer Luigi Da Porto found the original inspiration for the timeless, tragic novella that would later captivate the world.

The artistic crown jewel of the territory is the Palladian Villa Cordellina Lombardi, boasting a grand hall magnificently frescoed by Giambattista Tiepolo, who also sculpted the elegant statues gracing the classic gardens. The town’s rich cultural tapestry is beautifully completed by the Neoclassical Villa Lorenzoni—home to the “G. Zannato” Civic Museum—the historic Duomo featuring 15th-century masterpieces, and the Church of San Pietro, which treasures the exquisite Madonna della Sapienza del Buonconsiglio altarpiece.
